1GW1-3. A 1-5/16-inch diameter silver colored, coin-like, medal depicting the high relief profiles of German Kaiser Wilhelm II and Austrian Emperor & King of Hungary Franz Joseph I.  The backside of the medal depicts, in high relief, German and Austrian Army troops in a battle scene; embossed words around edge of medal, “Feldzug Gegen, Frankreich, Russland, England and U.S.W. The medal is dated 1914 and is embossed with the letters, “M. &W.ST,” on both sides. The medal is suspended from a 1-1/16-inch wide black, grained, ribbon; affixed to the center of the ribbon is a, stamped, silver metal oak leaf and acorn wreath with the date 1914 in the center; an enameled Prussian shield and an enameled Austrian, Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty shield is affixed to the right and left edge of the wreath. The top of the ribbon is suspended from a horizontal bar and a short chain with a spring clip device, which attaches to the loop on a pocket watch. Watch fobs were much in fashion during this period of time; a pocket watch was attached to the spring clip device and the watch was secured in a vest pocket or a special trouser pocket watch pocket; the ribbon and the medal dangled from the pocket thus advertising your military affiliation. The metal parts are very lightly worn, moderately aged and tarnished; the enameled shields exhibit small chips and scratches associated with moderate use; the black ribbon is moderate to heavily aged and worn; there are heavy frayed areas along the vertical edges and the black cloth is ripped and deteriorated along the top and bottom edges where it comes in contact with the suspension loops. The cloth would rate about fair; the metal parts are near Vg+. 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class, A WW2 Manufactured Example Marked L/57
Ic1stClass57Maker.JPG (64989 bytes) 1GW1-5. 1-3/4-inch wide x 1-3/4-inch high, magnetic center black cross, surrounded by a silver plated metal frame. The front center of medal depicts the letter, “W,” in relief, as well as the date 1914, which is the date the Iron Cross was re-instituted for WW1. The outside edge of the metal frame retains approximately 50% of its original, heavy, silver plated finish, which is flaked and worn off; some areas on the front have black tarnish lines and spots. The inside part of the frame, (the fluted lined part), is heavily tarnished in some spots. The iron center retains approximately 75% of its original matte black finish, which exhibits some light brownish soil and may have been touched-up many years ago, (I am not certain about the touch-up, it may just be the front of the medal has aged); no spider lines. The backside is heavily tarnished; maybe 5% of the original silver finish remains. The backside has a heavy hinge and a classic flared attaching pin with an open wire pin catch. The area below the pin catch is stamped, “L/57,” which is the, Nazi period, number for, “Borger & Co., Berlin,” who made Iron Cross medals for WW1 veterans as part of their regular line of WW2 medals. A good example of a WW1 Iron Cross first class medal manufactured during the Nazi period. A “salty,” specimen. About Vg-. $250.00 SOLD

The front and backside of the medal retains approximately 98% of its original bronze finish, which has insignificant signs of age, as well as the slightest signs of being handled and possibly worn on a  uniform or civilian clothing, (nothing of a serious nature). The medal is suspended from a 1-inch wide black, white and red ribbon, which exhibits light to moderate age, wear and insignificant soil from handling and use; the ribbon has some small holes or catches in the cloth signifying the medal was, probably, once pinned to something. The medal is heavily aged and exhibits light to moderate wear and would rate about Vg- condition. 2). The second medal is missing from the bar; the ribbon design, for the second medal, has a very wide black center stripe with a thin white and a thin yellowish stripe, on each side, which suggests the 1866 Koniggratz Cross for combatant, (this is just a guess). The ribbons are wrapped on a 3-inch wide x 1-1/2-inch high metal plate and crudely sewn together on the backside; the ribbon material is very heavily aged, very heavily worn and heavily soiled. The backside of the metal plate has two brass hooks for hanging the medals; the horizontal attaching pin is missing, as is the pin catch; the hinge part is still attached. Gallipoli Star, Also Known As The Iron Half Moon, (Der Eiserne Halbmond)
GallipoliStarEnamel1var.JPG (64142 bytes)

1GW1-12. This decoration is commonly called the, “Gallipoli Star,” the Germans know it as, “Der Eiserne Halbmond,” (the Iron Half Moon), it was awarded by the Turkish government to German soldiers who were serving with Turkish troops during the First World War; it was awarded for bravery in the field and was the Turkish equivalent of the German Iron Cross 1st class; many of the defenders of the Gallipoli Peninsula were awarded this decoration. WW1, as well as WW2 German soldiers can be seen wearing this award along with their German awards. This award was manufactured in several different qualities, ranging from a stamped painted version manufactured in Turkey and generally issued to other ranks, to a delicately detailed red enameled version that was manufactured in Germany and Austria; the German and Austrian variants exhibit a much higher quality workmanship and than the Turkish version. This nicely detailed specimen is an example of a better quality, German or Austrian manufactured, decoration, it depicts a one piece, red enameled, silver-plated, five pointed star with ball finials; the central design has a large, up-turned, crescent moon, which is a symbol of the religious faith of the Turkish Empire; the large raised symbol in the center of the crescent is the, tughra, which is the official signature used by, the then ruling Ottoman sultan, “Mehmed Reshad V;” the smaller round symbol is another seal or signature of the Minister of War; The smaller rectangular bar has numbers representing the Turkish calendar date, “1333,” (1915). The silver-plated finish exhibits areas of moderate age and moderate dark tarnish, in some spots, as well as very light and insignificant surface scratches, which are consistent with light handling and use; approximately 60%, or more, the bright silver finish remains; the red enamel exhibits light to moderate age with some dark spots deep within the enamel; the enamel is completely intact and in overall Vg+, or better condition. The backside exhibits moderate, (heavy in a few spots), tarnish and has a, standard, “German style,” hinge and a vertical, “flat-style,” attaching pin with a round wire open pin catch. A quality constructed, example. Overall Vg+. SCARCE. $295.00
