Italian Volunteer Sleeve Eagle |
 |
1GC-1. 29th Waffen Grenadier Division of the
SS, (1st Italian), Legione SS Italiana. In an agreement,
approved by Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, which allowed Italian
Nationals to be recruited for the Waffen-SS, 15,000 Italian volunteers
started training at the military training area at Münsingen, Germany in
October of 1943. 9,000 of these soldiers proved to be unacceptable and
were released to Police duties or work units. The Italian volunteer
units wore SS Runes on a red background rather than black, and
the left sleeve of their uniform had a "stylized" German eagle standing
on an Italian fasces symbol instead of a swastika. This example exhibits
a white thread eagle embroidered on, semi-smooth, textured red wool; the
eagle has SS style wings and is standing on an Italian fasces
symbol. The backside has Italian army gray/green fabric backing. The
front of the eagle exhibits, moderate, to near heavy, age, moderate
wear, as well as moderate overall soil consistent with actual use; the
knap of the red fabric is heavily worn, as well. The gray/green fabric,
on the backside, is frayed along its edges. The insignia is used and has
been removed from a uniform; the edges exhibit light signs of machine
stitching, as well as a few minor remnants of hand stitched thread.

 |
1GC-2.
3-7/8-inch diameter machine embroidered patch, depicting large, black, SS
runes on a white background with thin, black & white, concentric
circles, as well as a larger black border edge. This insignia was
designed to be sewn on the front of athletic shirts to identify,
“branch-of-service” teams during inter-service sports competitions,
gymnastics, physical training, etc. This impressive looking patch
exhibits light signs of age from handling; the white portions have very
light and insignificant soil from light use, (nothing at all of a
serious nature and almost not worth mentioning). The backside shows
slightly more age than the front and there are signs of sewing machine
stitching where the patch was once sewn onto a shirt. SCARCE. Vg+.

and some of the threads, on the knuckle part of the hand are loose from
handling, (nothing serious). This collar tab was liberated from the Dachau Concentration Camp by an Army Corporal

| Red Variation,
Auxiliary Security Police Arm Badge of the SHUMA, (Polizei-hilfskrafte
und Schutzmannschaften Ordengspolizei). Very Scarce |
 |
1GC-4c. An oval arm badge, approximately
3-1/8-inch wide x 3-3/4-inch high, bearing a central swastika,
surrounded by the embroidered motto, “Treu Tapfer Gehorsam,” (faithful
courageous and obedient), within a wreath. The swastika and design are
embroidered, using deep red thread, on German Police green wool
background; the red embroidered variation is very scarce and
difficult to acquire. This arm badge was worn by personnel, while in the
service of the Auxiliary Security Police, which were part of the SS.
Because the Germans advanced very rapidly into Russia, they left behind
vast areas that required clearing of stragglers of the Soviet Army,
anti-Nazis, as well as other “undesirables” in the civil population.
These “action groups,” were recruited from ethnic Germans but also
included local pro-Germans, as well as reliable captured Soviet Militia.
These action groups rounded up Soviet Army stragglers, acted as
interpreters, guards and “dealt” with the civil population restoring
order so that civil government could be restored in occupied Russian
areas; the Auxiliary Police units ultimately became, “ruthlessly,”
involved in anti-partisan operations. This example exhibits light to
moderate signs of age, wear and soil’ it has some areas of moderate moth
tracking, (no actual holes). The patch appears to have been used and
there are very light signs of hand stitching. A VERY SCARCE
VARIATION. Vg+. $275.00 SOLD |

Double-Armed Swastika Collar Tab for Concentration Camp Guards |
 |
1GC-4d. The double-armed swastika collar tab was said to be
designed by Himmler himself, for use by older wehrmacht, Luftwaffe and
other ageing reserve soldiers who replaced younger and more fit
SS Totenkopf troops who were
on concentration camp duty. The double armed swastika collar tab is also
seen, in wartime photographs, being worn by members of the 15th
SS Division, (Latvian Legion); however, there are no regulations for the
use of this tab by the Latvian Legion and the reason this tab shows up
on Latvian SS uniforms is still a mystery. This example is
heavily machine-embroidered, using silver/gray thread on a coarse black
wool background. The backside exhibits a single line of silver/gray
stitching with remnants of a standard buckram stiffener. The swastika is
moderately aged and some of the arms have toned to a light coppery/brown
color. The black wool background has a coarse appearance and exhibits
light to moderate age and moderate wear to the corner edges. The thread,
on the backside, has also turned slightly brownish, in some spots. The
shellac/glue like finish associated with a buckram backing is completely
gone, (most likely during laundering), leaving a tightly woven,
golden/tan, burlap like material backing. The tab has the appearance of
once being used but there is no obvious stitching or thread to support
that opinion. A nice example. Vg. $165.00 SOLD |

authority; this specimen has, one, large, black, ink stamp, depicting a
German eagle & swastika in the center, with German words printed
around the inside edge of the stamp; the lettering is not completely
legible, however, many of the letters can be identified. The armband is
quite wrinkled from years of storage; the front of the armband is in near
excellent condition and shows very light signs of age, no wear and very
minor soil along the folds on each edge, (nothing of a serious nature);
the black eagle is in excellent condition. The backside exhibits light
signs of age; no wear and has light signs of soil. An impressive and
important looking armband. Appears to be unused. Vg. $75.00

small, as well as several moderate size moth bites on the edge and

small bite actually goes completely through the wool material). There are
several stitch marks on the flat end, indicating this item was removed
from a uniform. The front of the conductors sleeve badge is in excellent
condition and depicts a, gold colored, winged railway wheel machine
embroidered onto a 2-1/4-inch diameter black wool circle. The backside of
the badge has a thin black material backing; the paper is worm around the

as well as light to moderate wear to the wool knap; the blue piping is
light to moderately soiled; the gold oak leaves and piping are
moderately tarnished, the oak leaves show some very light wear and light
soil. The white ribbed rayon circle is heavily soiled in spots and the
swastika exhibits some dusty soil. The face of the metal pip is
moderately worn, however, most of the features of the eagle are still
visible and some of the original gilt still remains. The red field has
one small moth hole on the reverse, as well as two old repairs on the

visible at a casual glance; the embroidered design is not affected by the
mothing. This insignia is worn on the lower left forearm of the service
and dress tunic. Nice. Unused. Not considering the very minor surface
mothing, the insignia is in excellent condition. $28.00
