| Cased Iron Cross
1st Class |
|

|
4GM-45. 1-3/4-inch wide x 1-3/4-inch high,
magnetic center black cross, surrounded by a silver plated metal frame.
Front center of medal depicts a swastika in high relief, as well as the
date 1939, which is the date when Hitler re-instituted the Iron Cross for
WW2. The outside of the metal frame retains approximately 95% of its
original silver plated finish, showing areas of light tarnish; the
inside part of the frame, (the fluted lined part), is moderately
tarnished. The front of the iron center retains near 100% of its
original black finish; not re-painted or touched-up. There are light
spider lines showing underneath the paint and one bubbled area that has
not broken through the paint; this is a natural aging characteristic of
this type of medal. The dull silver metal backside retains approximately
98% of its original silver plated finish; it has a heavy hinge and classic,
"coke bottle,” shaped attaching pin with a flat, open wire,
pin catch. The attaching pin is stamped, "107," (the number for
Carl Wild, Hamburg). the backside has moderate tarnish spots. The cross
comes in its original 2-7/8-inch wide x 2-7/8-inch long x ¾-inch high,
domed top, black leatherette presentation box. The outside lid is
stamped with a silver outline of the cross. A metal pushbutton on the
front releases the lid. Inside lid is covered with a white satin like
cloth; the base of box is covered with cream-colored velvet like
material and has a recess, in the shape of the pin; hinge and pin catch,
so the metal nestles flatly on the velvet. The exterior of the box is in
excellent+ condition; some of the silver outline on the lid has worn off
from handling; the interior lid has picked up a few, insignificant, soil
spots from the tarnish on the front of the cross; the cream-colored base
material has picked up a light brown tinge, leaving an outline of the
medal when the medal is removed. A classic, textbook example of a
mid-war, Iron cross 1st class in presentation box. Unfortunately,
some of the photos do not do this medal justice. Vg+. $350.00 SOLD |
