for Military Valor – Tarnished Silver Finish |
 |
2OC-18. Valore
Al Militare, (Military Valor Medal), awarded to the military for exceptional
valor, which did not warrant the award of the Military Order of Savoia. This
medal was first instituted in March 1833 by King Albert of Sardinia and came
in three classes, gold, silver and bronze. When this medal was awarded, the
name of the recipient was engraved on the backside. The
front of the medal depicts the Italian royal shield and crown, which is
surrounded by branches; the border is circumscribed with the Italian text,
“Al Valore Militare.” The backside has an olive branch wreath with space
to engrave the reciepetants name, (this example has no engraving). The medal
has a darkly tarnished silver colored finish, (no silver content),
which is lightly aged and worn on the highlights; there are some minor edge
dings and the outside rim is stamped with an unknown mark, (could be a
number 9 or letter b). The solid blue ribbon exhibits moderate signs of age,
soil, and wear. The backside has a bright silver spot where something was on
the metal for a long time. The original owner scratched his initial on the
backside, (looks like the letter A). About Vg. $30.00
