Note: As the post WW2 US military quickly grew, many different patches suddenly
appeared, creating “Officially Authorized Patches,” “Unofficially
Authorized Patches,” “Unofficial Patches,” “Unauthorized
Patches,” “Fantasy Patches,” as well as, reproductions of rare and
exotic patches, all to satisfy the military, as well as, the never ending
need of the collector. In
some cases, its reasonable to assume, that existing stocks of WW2 period
produced patches were used until exhausted, making it difficult to
determine exactly when a particular post WW2 merrowed edge patch had its
début. Generally speaking, patches containing the “New Army Green
Color,” do not appear before 1957; the merrowed edge patch started to
appear in 1968. In 1970, “subdued” unit and rank insignia was
officially worn on field and combat uniforms; although some “subdued”
shoulder insignia was actually worn before that date. Some of the patches
actually used today, appear the same as WW2 patches except for the
material content, (not 100% cotton), backing material and the addition of
the merrowed edge. Many of the post WW2 patches we offer are one of a kind
from collections we have purchased; some are factory samples, factory
closeouts or overruns; some are the patches we normally sell to local
units in our store and some were actually from the specific unit. When possible, we will
include background and historical information about a particular patch, however, some patches
will remain a mystery as they defy any attempts of research.

| 27th
Fighter Squadron |

4PWSQ-52. 3-1/2-inch
diameter yellow/gold patch with lower banner. The multi-colored
embroidered central design depicts a flying eagle. The unit has its
origins in the 21st Aero Squadron of WW1, giving the unit the distinction
of being the oldest Fighter Squadron in the Air Force. In the early stages
of WW2, the squadron participated
in anti-submarine duty in the Pacific Theatre of Operation, as well as,
air defense operations out of Reykjavik, Iceland in the Atlantic; later in
the war the 27th flew Lockheed P-38 Lightning’s in the
European and Mediterranean Theaters of Operation. From the end of WW2 the
unit made several station and mission changes, as well as, many changes
and upgrades of aircraft. The 27th Fighter Squadron deployed in
support of Operation Desert Storm. The Unit is presently located at
Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, flying the F-15 Eagle. The patch has a

diameter fully embroidered patch with lower tab, depicting a sword,
lightning bolt and orbit symbol. In 1970 the unit was re-designated from Heavy
Attack Squadron 10 with a mission of training US Navy and Marine

CV-61 – Aircraft Carrier |

4PWSQ-55. The USS
Ranger was launched 29 September 1956 and was commissioned at the Norfolk
Naval Shipyard 10 August 1957. The Ranger joined the Atlantic Fleet 3
October 1957 and then joined the Pacific Fleet 20 August 1958. The Ranger
steamed to the South China Sea 1 May 1963 to support possible Laotian
operations. From 11 August 1961 through 8 March 1962. The Ranger deployed
to the Far East for intensive training in preparation for operations in
the waters of Southeast Asia. The Ranger sailed for the Far East on 6
August 1964, on the heels of the unprovoked assault against the Maddox,
(DD-731). On the night of 2 August 1964 and two nights later, both Maddox
and Turner Joy, (DD-951), were assaulted by North Vietnamese motor torpedo
boats. The Ranger continued air strikes on enemy inland targets until 13
April when a broken fuel line ignited and engulfed the Number 1 main
machinery room; the fire was extinguished in little over an hour; here was
one fatality. While with Carrier Air Wing 14, the Ranger received the Navy
Unit Commendation for exceptionally meritorious service during combat
operations in Southeast Asia from 10 January to 6 August 1966. December
1967, Ranger commenced a period of sustained combat operations against
North Vietnam and during the next 5 months her planes hit a wide range of
targets, which include; ferries, bridges, airfields, military
installations, truck parks, railways, anti-aircraft emplacements, and SAM
missile sites. The Ranger returned to Alameda, California in August of
1973. On 28 May 1976, helicopters crews from HS-4 aboard Ranger, assisted
in Philippine disaster relief efforts in flood-ravaged areas of Central
Luzon. The Ranger, as well as other U.S. and Philippine military units
evacuated over 1,900 people and delivered over 370,000 pounds of relief
supplies and 9,340 gallons of fuel. On 12 July 1976, the Ranger and her
escort ships entered the Indian Ocean and operated off the coast of Kenya
in response to a threat of military action in Kenya by Ugandan forces. The
Ranger participated in Operation Desert Storm and the liberation of
Kuwait; and launched 228 sorties in the Persian Gulf, as well as flying
patrol missions in support of the United Nations declared, “No Fly,”
zone in southern Iraq in Operation Southern Watch. The Ranger was
decommissioned on 10 July 1993, and is at the Naval Inactive Ship
Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, Washington. The Ranger received 13

wide x 4-1/2-inch high black patch with multi-colored central design
depicting an evil eyed aircraft approaching head on. The Prowler provides
protection for combat aircraft, ground troops and ships by jamming enemy
radar, electronic data links and other forms of communications, as well
as, obtaining tactical electronic intelligence through the use of the
latest electronic warfare systems with long-range and all weather
capabilities. A very clever design. Unused. Excellent. $8.00
