Gas Mask In Original Cardboard Box, With Filter Canister & Labels -
Dated 1945 |
 |
2UE-11.
The gas mask is comprised of a black, thick rubber,
facemask with triangular eye lens and black metal frames; two,
corrugated, black rubber hoses; a large, black metal voice emitter,
“snout;” a black, elastic, adjustable, cotton head suspension and a
gray painted metal filter canister bearing a, large, OD paper
instruction sheet. The mask is marked, “USN U,” on the front of the
forehead area; it’s also marked, under the snout, “GR S Mk IV Lot 1
5-45,” and has the Mine Safety Appliances Company logo design, as
well. This unique, double hose gas mask, is the only WW2 gas mask
designed to be worn with the canister suspended at the back of the head,
which affords the wearer the convenience of not having to carry a gas
mask bag or to have a filter canister hanging in front of him while
performing his duties. This specimen has the original white cotton
twisted cord, which is used to secure the mask and its components during
shipping; an original, gray, pressed paper frame is inserted into the
mask, on the backside, to maintain the integrity of the shape of the
mask while in storage; a white, stiff paper, tag printed with basic use
instructions is wired to the pressed paper frame. The gasmask and its
components are all in excellent unused condition; nothing is dried
cracked, soiled or damaged; there are virtually no signs of storage age,
however, one lens has a scratch on it. The label on the canister and the
instruction card are completely intact and fully readable. The, gray,
cotton canvas carrying bag has a, large, top flap closure, which is
secured by three, blackened brass, lift the dot closures, it has a wide
adjustable shoulder strap that is detachable form the bag on one end.
The front of bag is marked, “USN U Gas Mask ND Mark IV.” The
carry bag contains one small cylindrical canister of,
“Fogpruf Paste,” for gas masks, plus a lens polishing cloth.
The cardboard box is approximately 9-inch wide x 8-1/2-inch high x
8-inch deep and is constructed of wartime cardboard; it has a label on
the top, which is dated Feb. 10, 1945; one side of the box is printed,
“Store In A Cool, Dry Place, Not to be stored near steam pipes, or in
areas of high temperature.” The gas mask has never been untied
and opened. Gas
masks are sold as collector’s items and not intended for actual use.
A beauty. Unused, Excellent.

Gas Mask – Dated January 42 |
 |
2UE-12. Grayish-green rubber facemask;
triangular eye lens with gray metal frames; single, corrugated,
grayish-green rubber hose, terminating at a, 3-1/4-inch diameter x
5-1/2-inch high grayish-green painted metal filter canister; 2-inch
diameter, gray plastic exhaust valve cover; gray, woven cotton web,
suspension tabs with adjustable, stretch, head suspension. The mask is
marked, “US SS,” on the front of the forehead area; it’s also
marked, under the chin area, “Lot B230 E41R115 M36 1-42,” and has
the Acushnet Company logo design, as well. The rubber facemask is in
near excellent condition; nothing is dried cracked or otherwise damaged;
it does exhibit light age and moderate overall storage soil inside and
out. This soil is basically from storage dust that most likely would
clean to excellent or better. The gray paint on the lens frames is
lightly aged, lightly scratched and scuffed. The gray paint on the metal
filter canister has very light chips, scuffs and scratches, a couple of
moderate dings in the metal, as well as a spot where there was once a
label. A very nice example that would be enhanced by its proper
carry bag that can be seen in the WW2 US pack and bag section on the
website. Gas masks are sold as
collector’s items and not intended for actual use. Vg. $45.00

| Stainless Steel Mess Tin
With Utensils - 1944 |
 |
2UE-13. Two piece stainless steel mess
tin with galvanized, metal handle. The handle is stamped, “U.S. E.A.Co.,
1944.” Complete with WW2 period knife, fork & spoon. The fork is
embossed, “Utica Cut. Co;,” The spoon is embossed, “stainless,”
and has the letters “DS” within a diamond border. I have never seen
a WW2 forks or spoon that was dated. The knife has a stainless steel
blade; he heavy cast aluminum handle on the blade is embossed,
“U.S.,” on the front side and is embossed, “B 1944.” The fork
and spoon exhibit light age and minor wear consistent with actual use.
The handle on the knife exhibits light age and minor wear; the blade is
bright and doesn’t appear to have been sharpened beyond when it was
sharpened at the factory. The very tip of the blade seems to be worn
from use and it has a very slight distortion probably from prying at
something, (nothing severely damaging or unsightly). The mess tin has
been used; overall it exhibits light scratches, scuffs and wear,
consistent with actual use. The lid exhibits light signs of use and
minor wear. The inside and outside of the pan section exhibits brown and
black spots from be used in a fire, (nothing very serious), as well as,
a few very minor and insignificant dings on the bottom, (nothing
seriously detracting). The steel handle once had a galvanized finish,
which has darkened deeply from age, use and heat while cooking. A
very nice example; this unit is especially nice having the knife and
mess tin dated 1944. Used. Overall about Vg to near Vg+. $42.00

 |
2UE-SC14. Approximately
2-3/16-inch diameter x ¾-inch thick, olive brown plastic, dry, compass
with a medium brown colored leather wrist strap; this strap is new made
and closely holds to the features of an original wrist strap, which is
almost always missing on this piece of equipment. The strap is
constructed using a, slightly over 1/16-inch thick, brown, oiled finish,
leather strap that is 5/8-inch wide and approximately 15-3/4-inch long;
it is adjustable and has a blackened brass buckle and 10-adjusting
holes, as dwell as one fixed and one movable strap loops. The strap is
long enough so it can be worn, on the wrist over heavy laired clothing.
The face of the compass rotates and there is a white arrow pointer is
etched onto the plastic face. The inside is non-liquid filled and has a
dark red, balanced pointer. The original luminous material on the
pointer is still intact but has lost its light absorbing quality. The
reverse is marked, “Corps Of Engineers, U.S. Army, Manufactured By,
Superior Magneto Corp. LI. City, N.Y. U.S.A.” Although the strap
is a reproduction it is very accurate and greatly enhances the compass. The
compass exhibits light signs of age and use and it’s in perfect
operating condition. The strap is like new. Overall Excellent. $42.00
