| Handmade Heart
Engraved, “New Guinea 1944, Sister, ” Reverse Engraving on Clear
Plexiglas |
 |
1USH-12. 1-3/8-inch wide x 1-1/2-inch high x
about 1/8-inch thick Plexiglas heart, which was, most likely, shaped from
available Plexiglas from WW2 aircraft canopies and windows. The heart is
very nicely formed and shaped on the front then the design and lettering
is carefully and artistically carved backwards, by hand, on the flat
backside; Various color paints are applied to the carved areas and
lettering; when the paint is dry the backside is covered with a neutral
color, in this case, white; the design then appears as a normal picture on
the front. The thickness and rounded edges of the heart give the design a
3-dimentional effect. This specimen has a thin wire loop affixed to the
top center of the heart so the heart could be worn as a necklace. The
front of the heart exhibits minor scuffs from handling and actual use; the
painted design is 99.5% intact; some of the white paint on the backside is
starting to crack, but it’s not a serious problem. A very nice,
hand made, piece of sweetheart jewelry that’s quite unique. SCARCE.
