 |
3USH-29. The armband has a 2-1/4-inch
diameter, highly detailed, bronze American eagle device, which is
separately applied to a circular bronze border. The backside of the
eagle has a horizontal, jewelry type, attaching pin with a roller clasp
pin catch. The cloth portion of the armband is constructed of 3-3/4-inch
wide OD cotton twill; the total overall length of the armband is about
16-1/2-inches long and the ends are not sewn together. The center of the
armband has a 2-3/8-inch green linen circle, which is crudely machine
sewn onto a 3-1/4-inch yellow/tan linen circle, which is in turn,
crudely sewn onto the OD armband. The bronze eagle device is hand
stitched onto the armband in four places using bright red thread. The
purpose, and or use of this armband are completely unknown; it was very
purposely constructed for a specific use, however, it has defied
research and identification; it will probably always remain an enigma.
We acquired the armband as part of a WW2 veteran’s estate. UNIQUE.

| 1940 Olympic
License Plate Reflector. The Olympics That Never Were |
 |
3USH-33. 3-1/2-inch
diameter, matte silver colored, metal frame fitted with a thin red
reflector material; the red material has a screen printed design of the
Official Olympic games emblem and the words, “American Olympic Fund
1940.” A short metal tab, with a hole, allows the reflector to be
attached to one of the bolts on a vehicle license plate or on a bicycle
fender. Funds for the sale of the reflector went to help support the
1940 Olympic games. The 1940 Winter Olympic games were originally
scheduled to be held in Sapporo, Japan, but several countries planned to
boycott the games because Japan was, at that time, waging an aggressive
war against China. When Japan decided that the games would be a
distraction to their military goals, the games were rescheduled to be
held in Helsinki, Finland, however, the start of WW2 in 1939 caused the
Games to be completely cancelled and the event never took place. The
reflector is in About Vg. unused condition, it exhibits light to
moderate signs of age; some of the vertical lines on the shield have
been touched up, (we didn’t do it); looks like something scraped
across it at some time and removed some of the white paint. Minor
remnants of clear plastic, which once covered the face of the red
reflector area, and held it in, are still attached under the crimped
edge on the front. The backside is stamped, “Flashad, Dura Products
Mfg. Co., Canton, O.,” (Ohio); the original sale price of $1.00 is ink
stamped on the backside. Also included with the reflector is a, vintage,
Official Olympic, pin back, emblem, on its original card, in its
original glassine envelope; the emblem has a hard cloisonné finish and
is in excellent unused condition. The card is printed, “Official
Emblem, American Olympic Committee, Price .50 cents. Proceeds used to
defray expenses of American Olympic Team, “For an American Victory in
the Olympic Games.” The two items came together. Two
very unique Olympic items with a remote military connection. Scarce $55.00
